What St. Matthew's Means to Me

by Terry Elsberry, Rector (1994-2017)

St. Matthew’s is beautiful old buildings, a history that taps into the roots of our nation, beautiful grounds and woodlands that remind us of God’s creative handiwork, extraordinary music under the leadership of our world-renowned organist Tony Newman, a flourishing program of worship, education, outreach and a variety of fun activities that have something for every age.

At St. Matthew’s we have a special place in our hearts for children—witness our excellent church school program, our St. Matthew’s pre-school and our new Children’s Chapel.  How many churches do you know who have a church built for little kids?

At St. Matthew’s we offer events such as our Chamber Concerts and Distinguished Speakers Series and our Art and Antiques Shows that are not just for us but for the whole community.

At St. Matthew’s we find a safe haven, a respite from the buffeting of life and also tools for living in this sometimes crazy world.

At St. Matthew’s we’re free—free to discover and be our authentic selves. Because God accepts us just as we are, we’re free to relax and accept ourselves and each other.  There are certain special times when you have the feeling that God is somehow extra present with us. Then you can almost feel the air turning a kind of liquid gold. It doesn’t get any better than that!

At St. Matthew’s we know that everything we do here is a part of something bigger, grander and more wonderful than anything any of us can do on our own.  What we do for and through our church is going to last forever.
