Bicentennial 2004
Bicentennial 2004 - An 1804 Church Service

Bicentennial serviceOn a sunny fall morning of October, 2004, St. Matthew's parish re-created an 1804 Episcopal service.  Not only were parishioners -- and the sanctuary -- decked out as they would have been in 1804, but the xxxxxxxx of Revolutionary War recreationists joined us to remind us of the war recently fought to establish the freedom of the colonies.  While many Anglicans during the Revolution were loyalists and left the colonies, those who remained established the Episcopal church in the new country.

We learned that the santuary would have been unadorned and that pews would have been purchased by their occupants -- the primary source of funds for a church.
