Chapel-in-the-Woods

In 1939 Rector Arthur Ketchum, walking down the east slope of the Glebe to where the Beaver Dam Brook runs and standing amid the towering hemlocks, envisioned a place of worship. An altar of a fieldstone slab supported by wooden posts was erected. A rustic cross was nailed to the giant hemlock in back of the altar. An altar rail of rustic woods and rough-hewn plank benches placed in rows were built. In 1958 when extensive repairs were made, a rood screen made of logs was built which gives an entrance to the chapel.

When the sun rises as the 8:00 am Sunday service begins, and shafts of sunlight shine through the trees behind the cross, and the murmur of the brook can be heard, and the birds are singing in the ancient towering hemlocks, it is easy to imagine that one is worshipping in nature's own cathedral.

The Chapel is used by families for baptisms, weddings and memorial services as well as for services for adults and church school children.
