Clergy

The Rev. Terence Elsberry

Terry Elsberry, Rector of St. Matthew's, is a fifth-generation Iowan. His careers before entering Virginia Seminary in 1981 were as Managing Editor of Better Homes & Gardens Apartment Life Magazine, Director of Corporate Communications for Carter and Associates commercial real estate company in Atlanta, and freelance writer.  Since ordination in 1984, Terry has served as Assistant Minister of St. John's Lafayette Square, the "Church of the Presidents" in Washington, D.C. and as Associate Rector of Christ Church in Greenwich, Connecticut.  He has been rector of St. Matthew's since September, 1994.  Married to Nancy Olds, Terry has four daughters and nine grandchildren.

Danny 

The Rev. Danny Lennox

Danny Lennox, Assistant Minister, supports the rector in pastoral and liturgical duties. He is also provides leadership in young adult ministries and adult education. Danny came to St. Matthew’s in the summer of 2009 via Christ Church, Alexandria, where he served as a Lilly Fellow. Prior to his time at ChristChurch, Danny studied at Boston University and Yale Divinity School. Danny is married to Abigail Lennox.

The Rev. Susan C. Wyper

Susan Wyper, Assistant Minister, is in charge of women's ministries and supports the Rector and the Associate Rector in pastoral, liturgical and preaching duties. Susan came to us from St. Luke's in Darien, where she was an active lay minister and Vestry member, before earning her Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School, followed by her ordination in the Diocese of Connecticut. She is married and the mother of three sons.

The Rev. Deacon Broaddus "Speed" Johnson

Speed spent the majority of his business career as an NBC Television Network Sales Account Executive. He was called to the Diaconate in 1980 as a member of the first class in the diocese of New York for the permanent Diaconate. He was ordained in 1992 and assigned by Bishop Grein to St. Matthew's where he had served on the Vestry and been a parishioner for 50 years. He is active in outreach and pastoral activities and takes the deacon's role in Eucharist. Wife "Chickie" and he celebrated 50 years of marriage in October 2004.

Robert Cummings, Senior Warden

Robert Cummings is the managing director of Dunbar Educational Consultants in New Canaan.  In addition to his duties as senior warden, Robert serves as an usher and was previously Co-Chair of the Stewardship Commission with responsibility for the Every Member Canvass.  Robert and his wife Poppy have been members of St. Matthew's since 1994 and have three children, a German shepherd and four sheep.

 

 

 

John Belknap, Junior Warden

John and his wife, Alison, have been active members of St. Matthew’s since joining in 1999 (10 o’clockers, left side).  John is a former chair of the Men of St. Matthews, is an usher and has been a member of the Bedell Committee since 2006.  John commutes daily to Manhattan where he is the CEO of a distribution company. He was raised overseas, returning to the U.S. to attend The Choate School and Cornell University, followed by business school at Cornell.  The Belknaps have a six year old son, Cliff, who is also a regular fixture at St. Matthew’s. The Belknaps live in Bedford with four cats and a Golden Retriever puppy, Snickers.

 

Vicky Allen

 

Vicky Allen

Vicky is a Lay Reader and Eucharistic Minister, as well as a member of the Welcome Commission.  She also serves with the Altar Guild, and Neighbors Helping Neighbors, in addition to working at the Antiques Show.  She was a delegate to the Diocesan Convention in 2009.

Vicky works at Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, and presents seminars on literature and art appreciation at Barat House, Manhattanville College. She has worked in education for over forty years, as a teacher of both English and French, as well as member of the Development Office of Convent of the Sacred Heart, and has studied and lived in France.  She has served on the board of the Open Door in Ossining, as well as on the Alumni Board of Manhattanville College, where she received a Master’s degree in English, specializing in Irish literature.

 

Holly Brown

Holly has been a member of St. Matthew’s since 1994 and lives in Bedford Hills with her husband Scott and three children: Madeline, Trip, and Kingsley.   Holly holds a real estate license with Sotheby’s.   She has served as the head of Coffee Hour, a member of the Women of St. Matthew’s, a Sunday School teacher, and organizer of the church's Mardi Gras celebration.

 

 

Mike Chace

Mike Chace joined St. Matthew's in 1969 and was elected to the Vestry in 2005.  He is a Lay Reader, Co-chair of the Music Committee and has served as Chair of the Woodlands Commission.  A delegate to the Diocesan Convention in 2004 and 2005, Mike attended the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes in 2007 and has made his Cursillo. He and his wife, Helen Clay, live in Bedford.  Their 2 daughters are married, live regionally and they have 4 grand children. Now retired, Mike is an avid skier and sailor and plays at tennis.  He is President Emeritus of Westmoreland Sanctuary, Secretary of Bach Works and  a Director of Master Singers of Westchester.

    Dan deMenocal

Dan has been a member of St. Matthew’s since 1987.  He serves as an usher and has been an active member of the Property Commission, Project SMILE and the Bedell Committee.  He is a Managing Director and Head of Equity Capital Markets with BNY Mellon Capital Markets, LLC.  He is also Treasurer of The Bedford Village Chowder & Marching Club, a civic organization in Bedford.  Dan and his wife Linda live in Bedford Village and have three children.

   Mary Farley, Treasurer

Mary Farley is Chief Financial Officer at Kunhardt Productions in Chappaqua. She has served on the board of the Women of St. Matthew's, the Christian Education Commission, taught Church School, and led the Youth Group.  She serves on Coffee Hour and is Vestry treasurer.  St. Matthew's business manager for three years, she is a Public Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.  Mary and her husband have two children and live in Mt. Kisco.

 April Foley

April H. Foley  

April has been a member of St.Matthew’s Church since 1997. She has served on the Board of the Women of St Matthew’s and its Hospitality Committee. In 2003, she chaired the luncheon for the Women’s Annual Meeting, and last spring was its featured speaker. She coordinated this year’s Art Show:Bedford Preview Party. She is a committed member of the Wednesday morning Bible study, and is involved with outreach to inmates at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. From 2003 to 2009, she served her country, first as Vice Chairman of the Export-Import Bank and then as US Ambassador to Hungary. She serves on the President’s Council of the Northern Westchester Hospital and the boards of the Council for the Community of Democracies in Washington, DC and the International Center for Democratic Transitions in Budapest, Hungary. She is a widow with three grown children, Catherine, Gifford, and James.

 

   AJ Heath

AJ Heath is a lawyer and a consultant on law and business in the republics of the former Soviet Union. He joined St. Matthew's in 1997 and was elected to the Vestry in 2007. He has been a confirmation class instructor, an usher, a lector, and a member of the Saturday Men's Fellowship. AJ was a delegate to the New York Diocesan Convention in 2006 and is Co-Chairman of the Every Member Canvass. AJ is also an adjunct professor at Fordham Law School and together with his wife Susan is Co-Chairman of the Parent Advisory Council of the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC.

   

Peter Keller, Assistant Treasurer

Peter and Lindsay Keller and their children, Hadley, Chandler and Xiaoling, joined St. Matthew's in 1998 after moving to Bedford from Chappaqua.  Peter has been active as the head of the Men of St. Matthew's and as an usher. He has been involved in oil and gas finance since 1978 and currently heads the Specialized Industries Division at The Bank of New York Mellon.  Peter and Lindsay are also active in the Bedford Village Chowder and Marching Club.

 Ursula LaMotte

 

Ursula LaMotte

Ursula, a church member since 1995 and currently co-chair of the Women of St. Matthew’s, has been a leader in our community for many years. On the Westchester County Board of Legislators from 1995 to 2007, she served as Chair of the Technology Committee from 2004 to 2006, and on a number of other committees, including Budget & Appropriations, Environment, Energy and Families and Education. Ursula was honored when she was appointed by the Governor to the State Conservation Corps in 1989, a state board overseeing summer employment for youths. She was elected a Bedford Town Councilwoman in 1981 and re-elected in 1985,serving as the Deputy Town Supervisor from 1984 to 1987. On The President’s Council of Northern Westchester Hospital, she is also on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester, Friends of John Jay Homestead and the Children’s Aid Society of New York. A resident of Northern Westchester for 47 years, Ursula and husband Tom (equally involved in church affairs), have three grown children and six grandchildren.

 

   Jack Lange, Clerk

Jack Lange is Office Practice Leader for property tax services for Deloitte & Touche, in Stamford, Ct. Jack and his wife Kathleen have been members of St. Matthew's since 1983, and all six of their children have been baptized at St. Matthew's. Currently a Vestry representative on the Christian Education Committee, Jack has served as an usher for many years and also as a Sunday school teacher. Jack is also a Bedford Hills Fire District Commissioner and is Chairman of the Town of Bedford Board of Assessment Review.

Aaron Taylor

 

Aaron Taylor

Aaron and his wife, Taylor, have lived in Pound Ridge since 1996.  They joined St. Matthew's in 2004.  Aaron has served as Chairman of the Men of St. Matthew's for the past two years.  He is Vice President, Marketing at ESPN, where he has worked for over 10 years.  At ESPN, he runs a group that is responsible for developing marketing strategies and communications to drive consumption of ESPN's league related content.  Before joining ESPN, Aaron worked in account management at Young & Rubicam Advertising.  A native of Simsbury, CT, Aaron is a 1986 graduate of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY and a 1992 graduate of the Kellogg School at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.  Between college and business school, Aaron worked in politics and government in Washington, DC, where he met Taylor.  Aaron and Taylor's son, Kemp, is a 4th grader at Rippowam Cisqua.

 

Steel Swift

 

Steel Swift

Steel Swift has been a member of St. Matthew’s Parish for seventeen years. Expert at dimming the lights on Christmas Eve, he has been  a regular part of the ushering corps for almost that long.  President and founding principal of global exhibition designers and fabricators Tangram International Exhibitions, Inc., Steel blissfully lives in Bedford Village with his wife, Tricia, and their four children, Isabella, Jireh, Hannah and Clement.
